2004 is the year of the built environment. To celebrate the Year of the Built Environment Mayne Investments in partnership with the Northern Rivers Regional Development Board had pleasure in announcing the inaugural Northern Rivers Urban Design Awards.
The Northern Rivers Urban Design Award sought to:
- Foster excellence in Urban Design in the Northern Rivers Region;
- Celebrate the special capacity of our region to develop innovative and sustainable urban design;
- Recognise designers in our community who contribute positively to our regions built environment; and
- Acknowledge the special character of our locality.
Urban Design Award Categories:
This Urban Design Award was given in 2 categories. The categories were commercial and government/community. The 2 prizes sought to recognise the contribution that both the public and private sectors had upon the development of best practice in urban design.
Judging Jury:
The design jury was made up of 4 persons, a representative from Mayne Investments, representative from the Regional Development Board, a person drawn from the community and a Jury Chief. Mr Chris Degenhardt of California has been appointed to the position of Jury Chief. Mr Degenhardt was selected as Jury Chief because of his comprehensive experience in design matters worldwide and his familiarity with award assessment procedures.
Judging Criteria:
The general criteria used for prize assessment are the matters listed below.
- Design excellence:
- Functional quality;
- Innovative design or demonstration of a new direction;
- Consistent and complete expression of concept;
- Sensitivity to cultural, historical, physical and natural context;
- Environmental responsibility and sustainability;
- Promotion of bio-diversity and supporting local ecosystems; and
- Providing value for money.
